About Transformative Journeys

Transformative Journeys was created in early 2006 as a result of a heart-to-heart conversation between two long-time best friends. I had been thinking for a while about how to extend my career beyond the college classroom when my friend told me how supportive and helpful I had always been as her friend. I said, "Well, that's what friends are for!" And she said, "Sure, but you are really good at it." After that conversation, I began exploring life coaching as a profession.

The purpose of Transformative Journeys is to enable people to become happy in their relationships and careers. The process includes helping people like you to determine and follow their life's various paths through coaching, support, and suggesting resources.

I have personally experienced the benefits of coaching and will continue to work with a coach for my professional and personal lives. So, yes, I practice what I preach!

About Felicia Slattery: Professional Background

Transformative Journeys is truly an accumulation of my lifelong skills and talents. From the time I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. "School" was my favorite game to play with my Mom & sister. When I was in college and I told my advisor that I wanted to teach college students, he told me, "Teaching college is too hard. Just graduate and go get a 'real job'." Shame on me, I listened to him. After several years in the professional world, I found my way back to academia. Now, I am proud to report, my most recent work experience includes, and continues to be, a college instructor of communication.

I completed my dual major bachelor's degree in communication and French from Bradley University in May 1992. Since that time, I have worked in a number of areas, all with jobs somehow relating to my love of communication.

After completing my first master's degree in Adult Education from National-Louis University in 1995, I realized educating people about communication was where my talent and enthusiasm should be focused. While working full-time in the corporate world, I attended the University of Illinois at Chicago, worked as a part-time teaching assistant and completed graduate coursework in just three semesters. Then, life happened! Between getting married and having two children, I finally found a way to complete my master's thesis and graduate with my second master's degree, this one in communication. In addition, I turned the research from my master's thesis into a textbook chapter (
see Chapter 10). The Next Big Thing for me? Life Coaching!! Life coaching fits perfectly with my communication and teaching background. I have been trained to help guide you on your life's Journeys and lead you to happiness and fulfillment.

About Felicia Slattery: Personal Background

While dating during my 20s, I read a lot of books about relationships and how to succeed in them. In fact, those relationship self-help books became the subject of my master's thesis. After three years of dating, my husband and I were married in October 2000. After suffering the miscarriage of my first pregnancy, my husband and I now are parents to two brilliant and beautiful daughters. Grace Anne was born on July 15, 2002, with the help of fabulous midwives and using the Bradley Method of childbirth; it was the most amazing moment of both of our lives. We also experienced the opposite of that peaceful birth in late December 2004, when our second daughter was born prematurely as I suffered and nearly lost my life to HELLP Syndrome, a relatively rare disease of pregnancy. My personal Journey into healing took some time, but now I am well and our Miranda Joan is a healthy little spitfire!

Nearly losing my life gave me a new perspective on life and is one of the reasons why I am interested in helping others. I share my birth stories because being a Mom is the most important job I have. I want other Moms to know that I have experienced two ends of the spectrum of childbirth, and can help you with your Journey into Motherhood with a point of view only another Mom can share.

I am fortunate to have many interests and passions in my life. I am an avid scrapbooker and enjoy creatively preserving my family's memories in albums that I will pass on to future generations. I hold a Bachelor of Scrapbooking Arts from Creating Keepsakes University- Album (April 2006) and am a published scrapbook artist.

Hand-in-hand with my love of scrapbooking is my love of photography. I enjoy capturing beautiful images. Much of the artwork in our home is my photography from our travels near and far. I also enjoy gardening and cooking. One of my favorite times of the year is the harvest season when I can walk out to my garden and pick ingredients for that evening's dinner as I prepare it.

I share with you a bit of who I am so you can have an idea of who your coach is and what I'm all about.
